Background
Augusta County and the Shenandoah Valley were largely settled by the Scotch-Irish, many following the Shenandoah Valley south out of southern Pennsylvania.
Overview
In researching the GILLIAMs (Gilhams) of Augusta it is helpful to remember that Augusta was also populated by the Gilkeson and Gibson families whose names in old records can easily be confused with GILLIAM. Also in Augusta is a family name Gilliland. This is likely NOT a corruption of GILLIAM.
[William Gilham by the mid 1790s removes to Shenandoah County.]
