Background
A register often grouped together with the cohabitation registers that provides solely for the legitimization of children whose parents are no longer living together is the Register of Children of Colored Persons whose Parents had ceased to cohabit which the Father recognizes to be his, 1866 Feb. 27
These registers were maintained separately than those for still–married couples and far fewer of them are known to survive. The information recorded is nearly identical to that of the cohabitation registers with the exception of the notation whether the children's mother was at that time living or deceased."
Overview
Listed in the Prince Edward Register of Children of Colored Persons whose Parents had Ceased to Cohabit which the Father Recognizes to be His, is a James A. and Sarah GILLIAM, born free, children of William GILLIAM and Mary, deceased. William states that his last owner was Mrs. Katy Jones. It should be noted that Reuben GILLIAM of the Cohabitation Register's last owner was also Mrs. Katy Jones, it is likely that Reuben and William are near relatives. It is possible that Mrs. Katy Jones is Mrs. E. C. Jones of the 1860 Slave Schedule who has slaves the ages of Reuben and Sarah. In 1870, Elizabeth C. Jones, age 67, is living with Catherine Jones, age 47.
