Overview In 1759 James GILLIAM, Sr., purchased 400 acres (371 + 29) in Cumberland County. The 371 acres were purchased from George Carrington and the 29 acres from Samuel Taylor. This tract of 400 acres is later subdivided into two tracts of 200 acres each which James wills to grandsons, Robert and Charles M. GILLIAM. Robert sells his 200 acre tract in 1797 to John Sandidge, Charles M. sells his in 1800 to John Stratton.

From Will of James GILLIAM, Sr . . . My desire, that a line be run from a stooping marked White oak, near where my path leaves Daniel's Road, to go a little above my plant patch to Woodson's Line, and all that part of my land that will be on that side of a line whereon my dwelling house stands, I lend to my wife during her life, and at the death of my wife I give the same to my grandson, Charles M. GILLIAM, to him and his heirs forever . . .

From Will of James GILLIAM, Sr., . . . I give to my grandson, Robert GILLIAM, the remainder of the tract of land I now own, to him and his heirs forever. But I desire that my son James shall have the use of the land during the minority of my said grandson, only that he shall not be at liberty to cut down or clear any ground upon the upper side of Cannon's Branch.

13 Oct 1797, Between Robert GILLIAM of Cumberland and John Sandige. Robert GILLIAM for 300 pounds sell to John Sandige a certain tract or parcel of lying on the heads of Cannon branch, a water of Willises River of 200 acres bounded by the lands of Joseph Carrington, Robert Carrington, Philemon or Hezekiah Davidson, Charles GILLIAM, Drury Woodson and Daniel Boatright which the said Robert GILLIAM inherits under the last will and testament of his Grandfather James GILLIAM.

15 Nov 1800, The Commonwealth of Virginia to Codrington Carrington and William Powel Gentlemen Justices for the County of Cumberland greeting whereas Charles M. GILLIAM by a certain indenture date the 15th day of November 1800 sold and convey to John Stratton the ____ Simple Estate in two hundred acres with the appurtenances lying and being in the County of Cumberland and whereas Elizabeth wife of the said Charles M. cannot conveniently travel the court the said county of Cumberland to make her acknowledgment of the said conveyance therefore power is hereby given to you or any two of you to receive the acknowledgment which the said Elizabeth shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance contained in the said jurisdiction which whereto annexed and you are hereby command that you do go tot he said Elizabeth and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privately and apart from the said Charles M. her husband whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without his persuasions . . .
