Joseph P. Gilliam

Dr. Joseph P. Gilliam was born 22 Feb 1837 in Brunswick, County to John W. Gilliam, Sr. and Mary E. C. Goodwyn, his wife.
Joseph entered VMI 30 Jul 1852. On 13 Jan 1855 he was dismissed for neglect of duties and insubordination. Joseph later attended University of Virginia from 1855-56 and Medical College of Virginia in 1857.
Joseph enlisted 2 Sep 1861 as 1st Lieutenant in Capt. B. J. Epes's Company, Virginia Heavy Artillery. He was later promoted to Captain and was captured at Paynesville 3 April 1865. He was held at Johnson's Island, Ohio until released on oath 18 June 1865.
Joseph was a farmer, physician and treasurer of Chesterfield County from 1882-1912. Joseph died 17 Mar 1912 at his home near Winterpock. He was buried at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.
